QuickBooks Desktop end of life: 2026 update

September 28, 2026 ·

Is QuickBooks Desktop being discontinued?

Not all at once. Intuit stopped selling Pro Plus, Premier Plus and Mac Plus to new US subscribers after September 30, 2024, and Desktop 2023 lost support after May 31, 2026. In August 2026 Intuit said Desktop 2024 will not be discontinued in May 2027 and will keep getting updates. Enterprise is still sold.

The dates that matter

QuickBooks Desktop is not being switched off on a single day. It is being wound down in steps, and the step that most articles still quote, Desktop 2024 ending in May 2027, is no longer Intuit’s plan.

Date What happened Who it affects
After September 30, 2024 New US subscriptions stopped for Pro Plus, Premier Plus, Mac Plus and Enhanced Payroll New buyers only. Existing subscribers can keep renewing
After May 31, 2026 Desktop 2023 discontinued: Pro Plus, Premier Plus, Mac Plus, Enterprise 23.0 and the accountant editions Anyone still on a 2023 or older version
August 2026 Intuit said Desktop 2024 will not be discontinued in May 2027, and that it is moving away from its 3-year lifecycle Anyone on Desktop 2024

Sources: Intuit’s pages on the September 2024 stop-sell (updated August 4, 2026), the Desktop 2023 discontinuation (updated August 5, 2026) and what’s new in Desktop 2024 (updated September 18, 2026), all read on September 28, 2026.

What changed in August 2026

Until August, Desktop followed a 3-year lifecycle: each annual version lost support three years after release, so Desktop 2024 was due to end after May 31, 2027. Intuit’s Desktop 2024 page now says that Desktop 2024 Pro Plus, Premier Plus and Enterprise Solutions will not be discontinued in May 2027, and adds: “We’re moving away from the historical 3-year software lifecycle.”

In place of a new version each year, Desktop 2024 gets updates delivered inside the software, and Intuit says it will keep version 24.0 current “for years to come”, including security patches, tax compliance updates and feature changes. Desktop Plus 2024 and Enterprise 24.0 were the last annual releases.

Three things the announcement does not change:

  1. New buyers still cannot subscribe to Pro Plus, Premier Plus or Mac Plus. The stop-sell from 2024 stands.
  2. Anything older than 2024 is still unsupported. Desktop 2023 lost its connected services after May 31, 2026, and the change does not bring them back.
  3. “For years to come” is not a date. It is Intuit’s position today. The statement names Pro Plus, Premier Plus and Enterprise Solutions; if you are on Mac Plus, check Intuit’s page for your edition rather than assuming it is covered.

What stops working on a discontinued version

Intuit’s discontinuation policy lists what a retired version loses. After May 31, 2026, Desktop 2023 users lost:

  • Bank feeds: no downloaded transactions, online bill payments or online transfers
  • Payroll: no automatic payroll tax calculations or payroll forms
  • Payments: no credit card or check processing inside QuickBooks
  • Support and security: no live technical support and no security updates
  • Other connected features: accountant’s copy file transfer, email from inside QuickBooks, and Shipping Manager

What keeps working is the program itself. The company file still opens, you can still enter transactions by hand and run reports. That is why unsupported files linger: nothing visibly breaks until the bank feed or the payroll run fails, and by then the books are usually a few months behind.

Which version are you on?

In QuickBooks Desktop, press F2 to open the Product Information window. The first line shows the product and year, for example QuickBooks Desktop Pro Plus 2023. If the year is 2023 or earlier, the version is already unsupported.

Your four options

Option What it costs Suits
Update to Desktop 2024 and keep renewing Pro Plus about $1,149 a year and Premier Plus about $1,609 a year for one user, after Intuit’s February 2026 increase, per Method’s summary Existing subscribers happy with Desktop who want to stay on it
Move to QuickBooks Enterprise Entry level about $1,873 a year, per the same summary Larger files, inventory-heavy businesses, more users
Move to QuickBooks Online $38 to $340 a month at Intuit’s list prices (or 30% off through a ProAdvisor) Most small businesses, and anyone whose accountant works in QBO
Stay on an unsupported version No subscription, but no bank feeds, payroll or security updates Nobody for long. It works as a read-only archive of old years

The August change mostly helps the first group. If you already subscribe to Desktop 2024 and like it, there is no longer a 2027 deadline pushing you to move. If you are on 2023 or older, you are unsupported now and have to pick one of the other paths anyway.

Should you still move to QuickBooks Online?

The deadline argument for moving is weaker than it was in July. The other arguments have not changed:

  • Your accountant or bookkeeper works in QBO. A Desktop file has to go back and forth as an accountant’s copy, and that copy is one of the connected features a discontinued version loses.
  • Nobody new can join you on Desktop. A new owner, a new bookkeeper or a second entity cannot start a Pro Plus or Premier Plus subscription.
  • Remote access. QBO runs in a browser. Desktop needs the computer the file lives on, or hosting.
  • You would be moving a file that is already behind. If bank feeds stopped in June 2026, the months since then need entering either way, and entering them once, in the new file, is cheaper than twice.

Reasons to stay on Desktop 2024 are real too: complex inventory, an industry edition such as Contractor or Manufacturing and Wholesale, or years of memorized reports built on Desktop’s layout. What doesn’t convert to QuickBooks Online lists the data that does not survive the move, sorted by what it does to the numbers.

If you move

The conversion itself is a few clicks. The work is in the file you move. How to convert QuickBooks Desktop to Online covers the prep and the menu path in each edition, and what to check after a QuickBooks migration covers the six checks to run once it lands.

If your Desktop file has unreconciled accounts, a balance in Opening Balance Equity, or months missing since the bank feed stopped, fix that before or during the move rather than after. Ledgerbrook’s migration service builds the new QuickBooks Online company for $199, one-time, with any cleanup or catch-up priced per month of backlog, and as a ProAdvisor we can provision the new subscription with 30% off QuickBooks Online. Send the file for a free review and it comes back with what will and will not convert, before anything is moved.
